PAL

Preparation for Adult Life (PAL)

At KS4, students are offered the opportunity to study GCSE PAL, a non-examined portfolio-based course.

Students can achieve a Level 2 (B grade equivalent) in this CCEA Vocational GCSE qualification. The course builds upon the knowledge and skills achieved in KS3 LLW.

The Level 2 specification builds upon the broad objectives of the Northern Ireland Curriculum. In particular, it enable learners to:

  • develop as individuals and contributors to the economy, society and environment;
  • develop personal skills in areas such as:
    • self-awareness, personal health and relationships (Personal and Social Development);
    • diversity and inclusion, human rights and social responsibility, and equality and social justice (Citizenship); and
    • work in the local and global economy, and career management (Employability);
  • develop an understanding of spiritual, moral, ethical, social, legislative (including equality and disability discrimination), economic and cultural issues;
  • investigate sustainable development, health and safety considerations and European developments;
  • develop skills that will enhance employability; and
  • make effective use of technology.

The course is composed of 13 separate units which fall under the headings of Careers, Citizenship and Personal Development. Details of the units can be found in the table below.
